I've just started playing skyrim and i'm trying to get the golden claw. I released the guy from the spider web but i let him get away. Now, i can't go on as i don't have the golden claw to get through the door. Is there any way of getting it, or do I have to start the game all over again?

Answer: Just be sure mark this as an active quest. This way you'll be able to find him via the goal marker, if he's left the cave then you'll likely have to do it the long hard way, on foot. Regardless of where he goes the objective marker will always be on him. If a quest is a failure and it is impossible to finish, it'll close on its own if the quest is still open then you can still catch him.
That or reload to a point before you ran into him.
