I'm not sure if we were able to get it's power/scream because we didnt see its writing before we killed the dragon.

Answer: It should still work, you can absorb the word, you just kill a dragon to activate it.There have been some glitches where a word wont be absorbed when you approach the wall. If that happens try reloading a save and try again.
